Hull & East Riding Amal Branch showing their support in todays' TUC day of action on Pensions 8th December 2011 Changes in Working Hours and Contributions
We have had a number of instances lately where members have contacted us to say that they had previously changed the number of hours they are working and have continued to pay the same contribution rates and there does appear to be some misunderstanding that subscriptions will automatically be adjusted by the employer once hours are altered.
Unfortunately this is not the case except with Royal Mail and we are reliant on Branches and individuals to inform us of changes in circumstances, the onus is on the individual to inform us of this and as I am sure you can understand we are experiencing some difficulties regarding requests for refunds which we are unfortunately not able to accede to.
I would be grateful if you could ensure that your members are made aware of this and I would also reiterate that which has been sent out previously in terms of sick leave and maternity leave which is that members or Branches should let us know when a member either commences or concludes sick leave or maternity leave and if these changes could be e-mailed to membership@cwu.org as soon as they occur then that would greatly assist us.
Any enquiries regarding this Letter to Branches should be addressed to Ray Walsh
Yours sincerely
John East National Organising Secretary

The YDWC's plan is to take on young apprentices who will have the opportunity to learn skills such as woodwork that could put them in good stead for the rest of their lives in what they believe is an exciting new future for working class people. Based in the centre of the city, the cooperative has started manufacturing pet accommodation and garden products made out of recycled materials.Giving a voice and an image to the collective cause, the company has recently produced a branch banner (pictured above) for the CWU Doncaster & District Amalgamated Branch.
Every CWU union branch in the country used to have its own banner that helped rally the membership, yet over the years, due to issues such as the costs involved and changing names, they have been lost. YDWC has shown that it is time to think again as modern production methods have brought the cost down.
He continues: "The CWU North East Region has long been a supporter of the Remploy workers. We have had a joint rally in York in the past through supporting public services. The initiative shown by both the GMB and the workers is one the trade union movement should take notice of. Losing funding was a disaster but not the end for these proud people." Background Having been one of 29 factories, Remploy York closed with19 employees. They stayed on in part time jobs such as charity shops, a stark comparison to the full time decent and skilled employment they once had, whilst others were either made redundant, retired or looked for work elsewhere. When the factory closed, the GMB union, which represents Remploy staff, along with their comrades on the Remploy Trade Union Consortium, started a campaign to re-open the York factory. Unfortunately the campaign fell on deaf ears. There was disappointment again at the Labour Party's 2008 Spring Conference, when a delegation of senior trade union officials, shop stewards and ex employees met thethen Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Though he committed himself to looking again at York, it was never fulfilled. Success at last Senior GMB consortium members, led by Phil Davies who then decided to look into the possibility of forming a workers' co-operative that would give employment to the former disabled York workers in an environment similar to Remploy. It would therefore be reliant on trade unions and the wider Labour movement to help support this now successful cause. The idea of a Workers Cooperative was tested out, and with success, on 13 May 2010, and the YDWC was born in Gillygate, York. CWU asks members to follow Doncaster and District by supporting YDWC and celebrating your local branch. A full colour 6ft by 4ft banner with castellation sleeves and three poles, of your own artwork is just £384.00 inclusive of VAT. Contact YDWC by visiting their website or by phone on: 01904 421091.
